I never learn my lesson.

And I always want what I can’t have.

When Sarah Henderson walks into my life, I tell myself she’s off limits. She’s my student, sixteen years younger than me, and my boss’s niece. It doesn’t matter that I see the same pain reflected in her eyes that I have in my own, or that the dead organ better known as my heart kicks to life when she’s around.

I’ve been here before, and I know how this ends.

It’s been two years since I fell for the last woman I knew I couldn’t have, the one with the ring on her finger that I chose to ignore.

Two years of trying to overcome that heartache when Sarah slides into my life.

Another woman I can’t have. Another woman I can’t stop myself from wanting.

I never learn my lesson, but with a constant reminder of how that last forbidden love burned, I think I’ve finally learned this one.

This time, I won’t chase what’s off limits.

This time, I’m staying away.

And I’ll keep telling myself that until I believe it.

My Review

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

First off, I’ve written this review as if you have already read the duet of What He Doesn’t Know, where we first met Reese. This review will contain spoilers from the duet so if you haven’t read it, might want to check that out before continuing.

Kandi Steiner, you continually break my heart just to put it back together again. Let me tell you now if you want angst, Steiner is the author for you, no one does angst quite the way she does!

I’ll admit I was worried when I started this book. As much as I loved the duet I was worried a spin-off just wasn’t going to cut it for me and that it wouldn’t truly give Reese the ending that I felt he deserved. But I was wrong. Kandi has once again outdone herself.

Ever since I finished the last page of What He Always Knew,  I have thought about Reese, I’m not going to lie, I had rooted for Reese to get the girl. My heart broke for him and I always hoped that he would eventually get his happy ending. After reading Sarah and Reese’s story, I see now that the way things ended with Charlie and Reese, was exactly the way it was always supposed to be. They needed to fall apart so that Sarah and Reese could fall together.

So, let’s get to it!

After losing his parents and little sister in a tragic unforeseen event Reese moves back home, where he then has his heart broken when he gets involved with his childhood best friend’s sister…who’s married. Reese fights for her, but in the end… he doesn’t get the girl.

Reese is heartbroken and miserable. Working as a music teacher at Westchester Prep and playing the piano at The Kinky Starfish, Reese is just trying to move on with his life when the headmaster of Westchester comes to him about taking on a new student, his niece, Sarah.

Sarah, a piano prodigy, has been through her own share of hurt and heartbreak. After suffering a repetitive strain injury, Sarah then, in my opinion, goes through the worst possible form of assault that a woman can go through, by someone who she should have been able to trust. After the assault, Sarah drops out of Bramlock University. 51755209_2102243946533599_3763021392933552128_o

Even with new scars, Sarah is determined to make her dream of playing at Carnegie Hall a reality. But she knows she can’t do it alone. Sarah needs help overcoming her repetitive strain injury and getting to that stage, and she knows just the person to help her.

During these lessons, Reese and Sarah connect. They connect more than just as a student and a teacher, Reese sees something in Sarah, and her in him, they are connected by the hurt and heartbreak they both are still healing from.

Sarah’s trust in people has been shattered. Reese doesn’t want to love anymore because every person he’s ever loved has left him. These two don’t just have hills to overcome, they have mountains!

But somehow, through the music, Reese, and Sarah not only connect, but they heal each other’s scars and make every day just a little bit easier to get through. First as teacher and student, then as friends, and then as…more.

“Sarah was unlike any woman I’d met before. She was positive despite the cards life had handed her. Where I broke under the tragedies of my life, she flourished under hers.” -Reese

51570606_2336445473305489_7049153342718607360_nWatching Sarah grow and come into her own skin again *sigh* I won’t even admit to how many times my eyes watered while reading this. Reese, my sweet, moody, complicated Reese. For more than a year now I have waited for Reese to get his happy ending. Of all the characters I’ve read, he truly deserved one.

That ending, I have absolutely no complaints. It was perfect.

If you are a fan of heavy angst, a slow burn love story, and characters overcoming tragedy, then What He Never Knew is the book for you!

-About The Author-

Kandi Steiner

Kandi Steiner is a bestselling author and whiskey connoisseur living in Tampa, FL. Best known for writing “emotional rollercoaster” stories, she loves bringing flawed characters to life and writing about real, raw romance — in all its forms. No two Kandi Steiner books are the same, and if you’re a lover of angsty, emotional, and inspirational reads, she’s your gal.
16603134_1283253321766003_3835062326678235425_nAn alumna of the University of Central Florida, Kandi graduated with a double major in Creative Writing and Advertising/PR with a minor in Women’s Studies. She started writing back in the 4th grade after reading the first Harry Potter installment. In 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.” She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a die hard hopeless romantic, and likes to highlight all the challenges of love as well as the triumphs.

When Kandi isn’t writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, talking with her extremely vocal cat, and spending time with her friends and family. She enjoys live music, traveling, anything heavy in carbs, beach days, movie marathons, craft beer, and sweet wine — not necessarily in that order.
